A NORTH Glasgow community has received a new defibrillator thanks to the fundraising efforts of two friends.
Janet Thomson and Elizabeth Wilson raised the cash to put the life-saving equipment in place in Sighthill by selling football cards and raffle tickets. Janet said: "I kept seeing the defibrillator up at Barmulloch and I thought, there's a lot of old ones living about here so it might be needed."
Keepmoat Homes, who are building homes in the area, also donated cash to cover the cost of the life-saving equipment which has allowed Janet and Elizabeth to direct the cash they have raised to other deserving causes. They have donated £500 to a local nursery to get child pads for defibrillators and more indoor equipment.
Janet added: "Some might say three in the scheme is too much. I don't think it is.
"This is a big thing because me and Elizabeth have never done anything like this before.
Elizabeth and Janet have beaten the odds to raise the money as Elizabeth has seven children to keep her busy and Janet suffers with fibromyalgia. Janet added: "It's sitting up there now ready to use, it's something I could never have dreamed of doing.
"I think having a defibrillator in the scheme makes it a lot safer. Every scheme should have one."
Janet paid tribute to everybody who contributed to the fundraiser to put the vital equipment in place. She said: "It's alright saying me and Elizabeth got it but to be honest with you, it was only an idea. Everybody got it. Everybody who put in £1, everybody who gave me 50p, even the wee boy who gave me a penny. Everybody in the scheme all came together and got it."
The machine takes pride of place outside of the local pharmacy in Sighthill and Janet and Elizabeth have their sights set on raising more cash towards an indoor machine as more houses are built in the area.
