TRAIN services in Glasgow have been axed due to an Omicron Covid outbreak among ScotRail workers.

The rail operator has been forced to cancel journeys across the city and central belt due to a shortage of staff.

Scores of employees are either awaiting results, are isolating due to being 'pinged' by Test and Protect or have tested positive for the virus.

The outbreak has caused chaos across the Scottish network,  with services between Glasgow Central, Queen Street, Edinburgh Waverley, Helensburgh and Balloch cancelled due to a lack of staff.

Services running to Motherwell, Neilston and Lanark have also been affected.

Rail passengers have been advised to check journeys to avoid potential disruption.

A Tweet from ScotRail reads: "We've had to cancel a considerable number of services today due to a large number of staff testing positive for Covid, awaiting test results, or self-isolating after being 'pinged' as a close contact of a person infected with the Omicron variant.

"Please check your journey.

"We’d like to say sorry to our customers who are being inconvenienced as a result of an increase in the number of our staff self-isolating due to COVID-19.

"We'll keep you updated."
