A BAR has accused Police Scotland of a "hostile" approach after they were forced to shut down on Hogmanay.

Video footage on social media appeared to show officers enter Avant Garde on King Street at around 11.30pm on Friday, December 31 and asked revellers to leave the premises. Cops also appeared to take drinks from customers.

Two customers were arrested after allegedly assaulting and being verbally abusive to officers.

The licensee has also been charged after it was alleged he failed to show officers the correct documentation and "obstructed officers."

Avant Garde has since accused Police Scotland of acting in a "hostile" manner towards them and has lodged complaints A spokesperson for the bar told The Scottish Sun: “Everyone was having a great night before police officers came into the bar claiming the latest Covid restrictions were being breached.

“The officers were very hostile to the customers and began to remove their drinks from the tables.

"Avant Garde music bar takes all precautions to ensure the safety of our customers. Our legal capacity is 306 persons however we only took 80 bookings to ensure people could bring in the new year safely.

“All customers were informed of the measures including the requirement for table service drink orders.

“We are disappointed with the police response and which closed the bar 10 minutes before the new year.”

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Officers carried out a routine visit at a licensed premises on King Street, Glasgow around 11.30pm on Friday 31 December 21.

“The 63 year old licence holder allegedly refused to provide officers with relevant licence documentation, or assist with any other requests and was charged in relation to this and obstructing police officers.

“This resulted in people being asked to leave the property.

“A 60-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman were arrested for allegedly physically assaulting and being verbally abusive to police officers, and licensing offences.

“No arrests were made in relation to covid guidelines. Enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.”
