TIMES Past followers love a good detective case, and this one comes all the way from a reader in Thailand.
Robin Wilson is trying to track down memories and photos of his dad, Bobby, a successful and well-known sea swimmer in Glasgow and Inverclyde in the 1930s.
“I know there were a few clips in the newspaper about him, some in the Glasgow Evening Times, and it would be great to find some more,” says Robin.
It was a long time ago. My friend’s dad said he saw him winning a race in the ‘regattas’ that used to be held when they swam across the Clyde from Gourock and finished at Dumbarton Quay on the Leven.
“Sadly, he died a few years ago and I wasn’t able to ask him any more.”

One clip, from the Helensburgh Advertiser, describes Dumbarton Academy pupil Bobby as the ‘champion boy swimmer of Scotland’, adding: “He is the thousand yards and the one mile Scottish record holder and bids fair to make a name for himself in more countries than Scotland. Young Wilson, who is 14 years of age , has a great future before him and his many friends wish him all success.”
