WORKERS are “devastated” after talks to save an East End supermarket from closure fell through.

USDAW, the trade union which represents workers at the Tesco Parkhead store said the closure was "terrible news".

John Todd, area organiser for the union, said: “It is terrible news for our members working at Glasgow Parkhead Forge Tesco Extra that the store is set to close at the end of April. The staff are devastated that discussions between the company and the landlord did not result in an alternative that will save jobs.

Glasgow Times:

“We are providing our members with the support, advice and representation they need through the individual consultations process.

“We are seeking to secure redeployment opportunities for staff and securing the best redundancy deal possible.”

The Glasgow Times revealed yesterday that the Tesco store at Parkhead’s Forge Retail Park will close on April 30 after the shopping giant claimed discussions with site landlords had fallen through.

Local MP, David Linden said he hoped a new tenant could be found quickly. He added: “Despite the hope a solution might be reached between Tesco and the landlord, is deeply disappointing news that the Parkhead store will close.

Glasgow Times:

“My immediate concern is for the staff affected by this and welcome Tesco’s commitment to do all it can to find alternative employment within the company to all those affected. I stand ready to help store colleagues however I can.

"The departure of this store runs against the recent trend at the Forge Retail Park, which has seen a number of businesses set up over the past number of months including Aldi, Starbucks, Burger King and the Gym Group.

“This busy retail park remains an attractive prospect and I hope that a new tenant will not waste any time in seizing the opportunity to fill the gap left behind by Tesco.”

John Mason MSP added: “It is clearly disappointing this Tesco store is closing with the resultant inconvenience for customers and very seriously the potential loss of jobs for their staff. I do hope they will do all they can to support staff and to offer them alternative employment.

Glasgow Times:

“There is only so much money in the pockets of local residents. So if one new shop opens, it is almost inevitable that another will close.”
