Two members of Glasgow Ambulance Service staff have received an award for their bravery while responding to an incredibly dangerous incident.

Willie Anderson, Technician, and Scott Diamond, Clinical Training Officer, were honoured at the Brave@Heart awards which recognises emergency service heroes, volunteer rescue organisations and members of the public who have performed selfless acts.

The pair were awarded for a time when, while on duty at the Glasgow West Station, they were called out to two separate incidents in quick succession.

While attending the initial incident they were approached by a member of the public who told them that there had been an explosion at a nearby takeaway shop.

Both men rushed to remove the staff from the shop just before a second explosion took place, starting a blaze with customers still inside.

Scott and Willie risked their own safety by forcing their way back into the burning building, rescuing a further 20 people as smoke started filling the shop.

They were then able to contact Fire Services and Police to request assistance.

Their award submission said: “It is clear that Scott and William acted above and beyond the normal call of duty, acted selflessly, to reduce the risks to the public and residents within the building.”

Scottish Ambulance Service Chief Executive Pauline Howie added: “The actions of these staff are truly commendable and they each showed extraordinary bravery.

“All our staff do amazing, life-saving work each day and this is a small sample. The staff are all wonderful ambassadors for the Scottish Ambulance Service and fully deserving of their awards.”
