A PRISONER tried to attack a guard with a sharpened knife.

Mohammad Ahmadi turned on Alan Whiteside at Glasgow's Barlinnie Prison on March 26, 2021.

The 24-year-old also kicked the officer on the thigh during the assault in the prison's C Hall.

Ahmadi - a first offender on remand - pleaded guilty last week at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assaulting Mr Whiteside.

He also admitted possession of a sharpened plastic knife in prison.

The court heard Mr Whiteside attended Ahmadi's cell at 7.20am taking morning requests.

Prosecutor Emma Baker said: "He unlocked the cell door and Ahmadi lunged towards Mr Whiteside who was holding a prison issue plastic knife.

"Mr Whiteside stepped back to avoid him and as he was doing so, Ahmadi kicked him to the left thigh."

An assistance request was made and Ahmadi was escorted from his cell.

The knife was later seized and noted to be "sharpened to a point."

Sentence was deferred until the end of the month pending background reports by sheriff Iain Fleming who continued his remand in custody meantime.
