TOP lawyer Aamer Anwar has spoken out about getting help for 'deep-rooted trauma' he has experienced.

The former Glasgow University rector took to social media to share a childhood photo of him with his family, and revealed that he had battled demons for 'decades' before seeking help.

He wrote: "For so many decades I’ve battled deep rooted trauma, dark moments came and went, channelling rage, help never sought and last several weeks life spiralling out of control.

He added: "Today was a first step in seeking help and I’m grateful to those in my life who helped me reach out."

The 54-year-old solicitor became well-known in Scotland for campaigning on behalf of the family of Surjit Singh Chhokar, a waiter who was murdered in North Lanarkshire in November 1998.

He also represented Rangers star Glen Kamara after he claimed to have suffered racial abuse by Slavia Prague player Ondrej Kudela at a fixture in March 2021.

Aamer spoke more about his mental health in a podcast last week, the Scottish Sun reports.

He said: “I have my dark moments. On and off over the years, my mental health has suffered.

“You feel completely alone. I have the flashbacks, I have the post traumatic, I have the anger.

“I sometimes sit there and think to myself ‘I want peace, I want to be able to switch off, I want to enjoy life’."
