A TEENAGER punched a man to the head during a disturbance outside Buchanan Galleries.

Shannon Govan, 18, was caught assaulting her victim on CCTV on November 30, 2020.

She appeared in Glasgow Sheriff Court for sentencing.

Fiscal depute Gemma Barclay said: “At 11.15pm the witness was working within Buchanan Galleries in the security room.

“At this time, he heard shouting outside the building and when looking at CCTV he observed a large group of people directly across from the shopping centre.

“He observed what he believed to be a disturbance and contacted police. The officers attended a short while later and observed a large group of people engaging in an argument.

“As officers approached, some of the group made off. The officers apprehended the accused following discussions with someone who had been present.

“The officers viewed CCTV footage, and this revealed that the accused had assaulted a male by punching him twice to the head. There was no injury caused.”

In a separate on November 11, 2020, Govan admitted behaving in a threatening and abusive manner.

Ms Barclay said: “At 2.30am, officers were speaking with the accused on Wilson Street, Merchant City, about an unrelated matter.

“During this conversation, the accused was very obstructive and uncooperative and refused to engage with officers.

“The officers explained that her cooperation was required. She continued not to engage with them. She threw herself to the ground. The officers eventually assisted her to her feet and continued to reason with her.

“She shouted ‘get away from me you scummy b******s’. She continued to refuse to comply. She was arrested and placed into a police cell van.

“Sometime later she started to calm down and provided the officers with details. She was cautioned and charged and made no reply.”

Govan’s lawyer described his client as an “immature individual at the time”.

He said: “She was intoxicated on both occasions. She comes from a good family. Both of her parents are pro-social. They do not condone any sort of behaviour like this but remain supportive of their daughter.

“She was previously placed on a six-month community payback order for offences similar. She was placed under supervision. Initially, there was a poor start, but things got much better, and it has assisted her in reducing her alcohol intake.

“She has changed her peer group. She hasn’t been socialising the way she used to, such as drinking in the street.

“The supervision has been successful, but she still requires to be punished for these offences. Hopefully, the court won’t see her back again.”

Sheriff Jonathan Guy told Govan: “The report makes good reading. You have turned a corner and have taken steps to address your offending.

“It seems unlikely to me that you will be before this court again. I’m going to draw a line under the matter.”

Govan, of Cumbernauld, was ordered to pay £135 compensation to her victim.
