SEVERAL new speed cameras are in the process of being installed across the city.

Glasgow City Council has revealed that the five fixed cameras have already been installed or are currently in the process of being installed on the selected roads.

These include Nitshill Road and Crookston Road in the Southside, Atlas Road in North Glasgow, and Bearsden Road and Great Western Road in the West End of the city.

A council spokesperson said: “Each year, experienced officers look at speed-related casualties across the city and look for any clusters that meet set criteria that could warrant the help of a safety camera and help reduce the risk of incidents.”

There will also be a mobile camera at Springfield Road, in the East End of the city.

We previously reported on the new average speed camera at Parkhouse Road in Glasgow's Southside.

These cameras were activated in December following five speed-related injury collisions in recent years, including one which resulted in serious injury.

Council bosses say speed cameras are placed only in the areas most in need - in terms of road casualty reduction.

When selecting sites to enforce, Safety Cameras Scotland in partnership with council officers, follow a selection process where strict criteria are applied.

These criteria include:

  • A history of injury collisions - have people been injured on this road and what was the severity of the injuries sustained?
  • Speed profile - is there a problem with vehicles speeds on this road?
  • Agreement from partners - do Police Scotland and the Local Roads Authority agree that a safety camera is the right solution?
  • Enforcement strategy - what will be the best type of camera for this location?
  • Site review - an annual review - is this camera reducing injury collisions?
