GLASGOW residents have reacted to the news of parking charges being implemented at Pollok Country Park.

We previously reported that from March 7, the charges will come into effect ahead of an anticipated increase of visitors to the Southside park when the Burrell Collection reopens.

The charges will apply from 10am to 6pm on Monday to Sunday, priced at £2.50 for four hours and £4.50 all day.

Glasgow City Council says that the main objective of the charges is to encourage more active travel and that they will support this with a free electric shuttle bus.

The bus will operate from February 28.

A Pollok Country Park community group told of the charges and the free bus on their Facebook page, which garnered strong reactions from locals and visitors.

Some were concerned about the accessibility of the bus, which will operate solely within the park.

One comment read: "Pity the electric bus isn't able to assist people from the Haggs Road entrance too. Don't agree with the parking charges either.

"It will exclude a lot of people from using the park. It should be free for all to use as was intended.

"I won't be able to use the park now as by the time I walk to it I won't have the energy to walk through it."

Another questioned if disabled visitors would be able to access the bus and if they have to pay for parking.

One visitor said: "I am shocked to hear of car park charges in the park that the Maxwell family gave to the people of Glasgow.

"The Burrell is opening soon and many people can’t afford parking charges."

Meanwhile, one local commented that the introduction of the shuttle bus would be handy for when the museum reopens on March 29.
