A man from Glasgow has told of being stranded in Ukraine with his wife and two year old son.

Sean Cusick said he, his wife, Chloe and two-year old son are unable to leave due to  lack of money and problems with travel documents.

In a radio interview, he told of waking to the sound of bombs dropping, from their home in eastern Ukraine, as Russia began its invasion.

He said: “I started to feel them first then hear them, the dull thump and rumble, again and again.

“We’ve prepared our go bags. But we’ve been told by the authorities to say home, told by the UK government to stay home if you can’t leave, we can’t leave.”

He said all the airports have been attacked and not useable and said it would be a few days on trains to get to the border.

He added: “The trains are running but I don’t have the money to get a train.”

Mr Cusick, whose family are in the south side of Glasgow, said he moved to Ukraine in October  to get married to Chloe after she moved from China where she had been living for ten years.

He said since they got married in November, they have been trying to leave but his wife doesn’t have the documents needed for her passport and is now unable to collect them.

He said she was due to pick up her national ID today (Thursday) but added: “Obviously that’s probably not going to happen.

“She needed that ID to apply to renew a passport."

He said: “Like everyone I’ve been hit pretty hard by covid and trying to get my partner out of China and coming here. I don’t have money for rent, don’t have money for food.”

In a go fund me page, Sean said: “You will all be aware of the escalating international crisis in Ukraine and the advice for all UK citizens to leave. However, what about those of us with families? I can't leave Chloe and Everett behind.

“Chloe's ID and passport are currently being updated to reflect her married name, consequently she has no valid travel ID. Chloe also has a medical condition that requires urgent treatment, including a blood transfusion.

“We urgently need money to expedite documents, get transport and flights, and pay for medical bills and child care.

“Please help my young family to evacuate to Britain.”

Stewart McDonald, Glasgow South SNP MP is offering support and backed his fundraising effort.

Glasgow Times:

He said: “I’ve just finished a zoom call with Sean. I’ll be working to resolve some of the bureaucratic issues and he hopes to be able to get to safety soon.

“Please support his fundraising page - it’s vital to getting him and his family to safety.”

The page has already secured more than £3000.
