A DRUNK man had to be pinned to the ground by Elfingrove security staff after carrying out an attack on a taxi driver.

Callum Hamilton kicked off after the driver, William McColl, told him to get out of his cab as he had no money for the fare.

The 28-year-old was so drunk that when he was arrested he asked cops to drop him at his mum's house.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard how at 4.40pm on December 14, 2019, a witness the court named as Ms Dewar was at an ATM outside Tesco on Argyle Street and became aware of Hamilton leaving the store.

She saw him weaving through the traffic towards Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and was concerned about his behaviour so she followed him.

A second witness, Mr Coyle, was working in Elfingrove as a security guard.

The fiscal depute said that, meanwhile, at 4.50pm Mr McColl was in his taxi on Argyle Street stationery in traffic.

Ms Dewar saw Hamilton, from Partick, entering Mr McColl’s taxi.

Mr McColl saw that Hamilton was intoxicated and asked him if he had the money to pay for the fare.

Hamilton said he did not have the money and so he was asked to leave the vehicle.

He got out of the cab but began striking the rear passenger doors.

Mr McColl exited the taxi and confronted Hamilton who tried to strike the driver with a closed fist but instead lost his balance and fell off the kerb on to the ground.

The cabbie then restrained him on the ground while Ms Dewar called Mr Coyle, her boyfriend, who came from Elfingrove to assist.

Police arrived at the scene and handcuffed Hamilton, warning him several times as to why he had been detained.

But a drunk Hamilton repeatedly asked why he was being arrested and repeatedly said he had done nothing wrong.

He even asked police officers to drop him at his mum’s house.

Hamilton’s defence brief said: “This was wholly unacceptable conduct.

“This seems to have been an isolated incident where he had had too much to drink.”

The 28-year-old appeared in court from custody and Sheriff Amel Elfallah deferred sentencing to await the outcome of other matters relating to him.
