A NEIGHBOURHOOD in Glasgow is getting ready for its annual display of lights and colours - this year with a little tribute to Ukraine.

Now in its third year, the Mount Florida Window Wanderland is taking place this weekend.

Every evening between 6 and 9pm, from Saturday, March 5, until Monday, March 7, homes in the area will put up a show on their windows, with colourful lights and tissue creations.

People are invited to take a walk through the neighbourhood to admire the fabulous designs.

Created in Bristol in 2015 to reduce social isolation, Window Wanderlands helped communities feel connected during the pandemic and enhanced people’s wellbeing.

More than 70 windows have joined the initiative in Mount Florida so far, which this year is also giving residents the option to display blue and yellow colours in solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

For the occasion, local cafes will also be open in the evenings, including The Funkwhistle Cafè on Clincart Road and Arturo’s on Carmunnock Road.

Organiser Nicola Smith said: “It's a really friendly, heartwarming event.

“Window Wanderland is a community-based event which is completely free to participate in - either to make a window or just go strolling around.

“We started it in Mount Florida after being inspired by the Strathbungo events.

“Last year we had a bumper display of 175 windows because everyone was home during lockdown with nothing else to do!

“This year we're currently at a more manageable, 75 but more are registering every day."

She added: “It's fun to make something beautiful and cheerful in the gloom of winter, and there's a real sense of camaraderie amongst folk walking round viewing the windows.

“This year we have had a lot of interest in showing support for Ukraine, so we've put together blue and yellow tissue bundles so that people can light a window as the Ukrainian flag.”
