AT Glasgow Clyde College, we see hundreds of students apply to study their National 5s and Highers with us every year – many of whom didn’t have a positive experience at school.

Our courses provide a fresh start to continue learning in a new environment and our philosophy is to help students develop the confidence to pass these crucial exams.

It’s vital we ensure students feel supported and have clear goals, which is why we have restructured our Highers programme this year.

By providing our students with a route for progression, it motivates them to work towards their exams.

Many students come to the college to gain the mandatory National 5s and Highers needed to apply for degrees such as teaching, or to move into a career in medicine or health care.

This year, we’ve created exciting new courses to meet this demand.

Our brand-new course Get Into Primary Teaching has been developed for those aspiring to study primary teaching at university but don’t have the National 5 Maths and Higher English required to apply.

Instead of offering the two subjects, we’ve created a course encompassing all the necessary requirements, giving students a head start.

The course covers an Introduction to Sports Coaching, teaching the basics necessary to run a gym class with primary kids, and an Introduction to Spanish.

We’ve also been working closely with the University of Strathclyde, who will run workshops throughout the academic year to support students applying for university places on the undergraduate BA in Primary Education.

Learners also have guaranteed entry to our HNC in Childhood Practice – a Level 7 qualification which is the same as first year at university – putting students in a strong position to apply for further university education.

The Get Into Medical and Health Industries course offers learners Higher Human Biology, Higher English, and National 5 Maths – all mandatory qualifications for applying to study in areas such as Paramedic Science, Nursing or Midwifery.

Additionally, we’ve been communicating closely with Glasgow Caledonian University’s Paramedic Science team to support students wishing to become a paramedic.

The team will be assisting us to provide support and workshops which will help students to apply for the BSc Paramedic Science degree programme.

The course also offers entry to our popular HNC Healthcare Practice, which transfers directly onto the second year on a number of nursing degree programmes.

Finally, for students unsure of their final career destination, we’ve created groupings of National 5s and Highers to guide them towards their next step.

Our National 5 and Higher Science courses offer students the chance to study Maths, English and the sciences.

Our goal for this year is to help every student that comes through our doors discover a career path that best suits them.
