GLASGOW has always been rightly proud of its long tradition of department stores. The city centre was full of them - Treron’s, Copeland & Lye, Watt Bros, Lewis’s - and the names are legendary.
However, does anyone know of a department store in Shawlands?
Times Past reader Julie Betterton got in touch to ask if anyone can shed any light on such a store existing from around the early 1900s.
She explained: “I am trying to trace the McIntosh family who owned a department store in Shawlands, in Glasgow. I do not know the dates it was in business, but would possibly be early 1900s. This store may have been owned by James McIntosh and his wife Jessie, or possibly a relative of James, and the couple had a daughter called Catherine, who married Joseph Armstrong.”
Julie adds: “James and Jessie Mcintosh are my great-great-grandparents. Their grandson Joseph Armstrong was my grandfather. I would love to see photos of my Scottish relatives and the store they owned. “
