ONE person was rushed to hospital after a car crash on the off-slip of the M74, near Larkhall.

Traffic Scotland is alerting drivers to "heavy congestion" following the accident on the A72 which closed the M74 southbound exit slip at Junction 7.

The crash took place around 12.49pm, between Junction 7 (Larkhall) and Junction 6 (Hailton), on Sunday, March 20.

An image posted by the service on Twitter shows a police car blocking the exit slip road as traffic tails back on the motorway.

The tweet read: "Following an RTC on the A72, the southbound off-slip from the #M74 at J7 remains closed.

"There's also heavy congestion on the non-trunk A71 between Garrion Bridge and Burnhead Road junction."

The alert on Traffic Scotland's website reads: "Due to a road traffic accident the M74 southbound exit slip at Junction 7 is closed.

"Motorists are advised to use an alternative route at this time."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 12.30pm on Sunday, 20 March, officers were called to a road crash involving two vehicles on the off-slip of the M74 Larkhall at its junction with the A72. 

"One driver has been taken by ambulance to the University Hospital Wishaw and police enquiries are ongoing."
