ONLY one tale we could really start with this week isn’t there?
Yep, the Will Smith v Chris Rock Oscars slapdown is the showbiz story of the week, probably month, possibly year.
What the hell has this got to do with a Glasgow Taxi driver I hear you ask?
Well within about five minutes of it happening, among the million jokes doing the rounds on social media there was already one linking the Fresh Prince with the trade:
“Will Smith would never survive a Glasgow taxi queue”, jested one Twitter comedian.

Wouldn’t that be a great sight? Big Willie Style staggering out of Pizza Crolla to grab a cab back to his crib.
Another, from a Kieran on Twitter, commented on Monday: “Just got in a taxi there and the driver’s giving it “what about that Will Smith eh?”
“Only in Glasgow (laughing face emoji!)”
Well, we do like to keep the chat topical … sure does beat “are you busy tonight driver …”.

Anyway, having a wee look around Twitter brought up another Glasgow Taxi related comment that caught my eye: “I’m looking to find a Glasgow taxi driver who helped a vulnerable relative of mine today. The driver spotted trouble and drove them home & then to the hospital. Long shot but we’d like to say thanks.”
Now as far as I can see, this tweet - from Twitch 'sumbdy' - has not been updated with news as to whether the driver has been found or not. That, of course, is less important than the fact this person’s loved one was looked after at a time they really needed it.
Or as a fellow driver who replied to the tweet so perfectly put it: “I hope your relative is doing okay; I’m sure that most taxi drivers would step up in the circumstances, and I think your appeal will make us all feel appreciated - I’ve no doubt you’ll find him/her - WE ARE THE EYES AND EARS OF THE CITY.”
Hear hear.
Finally this week, there is just one more piece of news to share, which I promised to update you on today when I wrote last week's column.
The winner of this year’s Glasgow Taxis Cup, which took place last Wednesday, is …
“The University of Glasgow!”
Congratulations to all at Glasgow and everyone at all three city Unis who took part, it was great to follow the rolling results on Twitter – it’s been quite the place to be these past few days!
Stay safe (especially you, Chris Rock!!!).
