A scheme  to pick up unwanted goods is saving people money and helping others.

Home Comforts provides free furniture and white goods to Wheatley Homes Glasgow tenants who need extra support.

The service takes donated pieces of unwanted furniture – such as sofas, beds, cookers, wardrobes and fridges – and upcycles them before passing them to tenants.

Donated furniture – which is picked up free of charge – is a great way of recycling and helps prevent furniture being sent to landfill or dumped in backcourts.

It’s also a good way to help other tenants struggling to furnish their home.

In the past three years, Home Comforts has distributed more than 6600 items of furniture and white goods to almost 1800 households in and around Glasgow.

That represents 280 tonnes of furniture which would otherwise have been dumped or gone to landfill.

In the past year alone, 25% of customers who received furniture were previously homeless.

Bernadette Hewitt, Tenant Chair of Wheatley Homes Glasgow, said: “Home Comforts is a real lifeline to tenants struggling to furnish their home.

“As the cost of living continues to rise, there’s a real need for this support among our tenants and we’ll continue to do as much as we can to help.”

Home Comforts is certified under the Revolve scheme through Zero Waste Scotland and meets all legislative and trading standards, as well as standards in cleanliness and service.

Any tenant who needs support to furnish their home, or wants to donate furniture, should contact their housing officer.
