A man who kicked a dog with such force it was 'lifted off the ground' has been banned from owning animals for three years.

Scott Brown went to Whitehouse Grocers in Penilee to speak with his dad on May 4. On leaving, he hurt the dog and punched its owner.

He appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court last week for sentencing after being charged with assault and kicking the pet.

Prosecutor Laura Martin said: “At 5pm, the accused left the store and appeared to be agitated.

“As he left, he backheeled a dog. This was with such force that the dog was lifted from the ground.

“The owner of the dog approached the accused and warned him to stop hitting his dog.

“The accused reacted by punching the owner to the right side of the face.”

Police attended and Brown, 36, was later traced and cautioned and charged.

His lawyer said his client accepts that his behaviour was “completely unacceptable”.

The defence solicitor added: “His father asked him to come round to sort something out and things quickly turned.

“He’s embarrassed, and quite frankly, so he should be. He’s backing himself into a corner with options.

“I would be seeking to persuade you to place him on a structured deferred sentence or restriction of liberty order.”

Sheriff Allan Findlay told Brown: “I’m told you will cooperate with a restriction of liberty order. If you breach it, you will be back here, and I’ll deal with this differently.”

He was tagged and ordered to stay within his home from 7pm-7am for four months.

The sentence was imposed as a direct alternative to custody.

Brown, of Penilee, was banned from owning or being in charge of an animal for three years.
