Last year, eight charities across Scotland benefited, including three based in Glasgow - Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland, which received £2897.65, cancer support centre Maggie’s Glasgow which banked £3900.41, and animal welfare charity Beloved Rabbits which received £1175.66.
Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland allocated its portion of the funding to its service supporting people returning home from hospital, while the team at Beloved Rabbits in Kirkintilloch used the funding to pay vet bills associated with preparing rabbits for their new home.
Maggie’s Glasgow used its windfall to help fund its Where Now? course which supports people with a cancer diagnosis after their treatment has finished. The course provides attendees with skills and techniques to support them through the transition period and beyond.
Glasgow businessman and father-of-two Alan Turnbull benefited from many of the services provided by Maggie’s and during our Cash for Charity campaign last year, he explained why the centre is a huge support to people going through cancer.
“You have the shock of a diagnosis and the medical treatment that follows,” he said.
“In my case I had found a lump on my neck in 2019 and after tests I was told it was cancer of the tonsils.
“I had an operation, radiotherapy and chemotherapy and the medical care I had was first class. However, this all came with extreme anxiety and that’s where Maggie’s came in. They offer counselling, relaxation therapy.”

He added: “I had never thought of going to the likes of tai chi, but I went along to one of the classes and found it helped.
"I remember going to a counselling session and my wife Lesley was outside. She wondered what on earth we were talking about as she could hear laughter, but the staff have a way of making you feel at ease.”
The couple and their two daughters, Laura, 26, and Kirsty, 22, said they will always be grateful to Maggie’s for their support and have been fundraising themselves for the charity.
Perhaps you volunteer or work for a local charity, or have had support from one. Tell us why they should win a share of this cash.
The closing date for nominations is September 4.
Once all nominations have been received, our editor will select the most deserving causes to be featured in this year’s grants scheme.
We will then put the power to allocate the cash back into your hands - for four weeks, readers will be invited to collect tokens from our newspapers which can then be sent to collection points across our region or posted.
Each token collected will be counted and used to allocate cash to the nominated charity. So if your favourite charity collects 50% of all tokens collected, it will receive 50% of the cash pot.
The £16,000 cash is being provided by our parent company’s charitable arm, The Gannett Foundation.
This year the Gannett Foundation will donate £128,000 to charities across the country.
