EDUCATION bosses have now taken the decision to close schools for three days next month due to strikes.

As reported in the Glasgow Times, GMB Scotland and Unison Scotland have given notice to Glasgow City Council of industrial action in schools and nurseries.

Executive director of education Douglas Hutchison has now confirmed some schools will shut on September 6, 7 and 8.

This will include nurseries, primaries and ASL schools across the city but secondaries will remain open.

They will reopen on Friday, September 9 and parents of children who receive free school meals will receive a payment to their bank account.

Strikes involve learning workers, escorts and administration staff, catering, janitorial, cleaning services and school crossing patrollers, meaning it would be unsafe to open schools.

Mr Hutchison said in a letter to parents: "Our aim, as always, is to secure a safe environment for our staff and young people and maintain continuity of learning where possible but the extent of the action on this occasion means that we have had to take the decision to close all the city’s Primary Schools, Early Learning and Childcare establishments, and ASL schools."

Staff in secondary schools are contracted out to AMEY and so are separate from the ongoing pay dispute between council workers and umbrella body COSLA.

Although high schools will be open, there will be some limits to services.

These include no breakfast club or mid-morning snack provision; school meals will be packed lunches and snacks; and there will be no after school care provision as all school lets will be cancelled.

Escort provision for pupils entitled to transport cannot be guaranteed and parents and carers are asked to make alternative arrangements.

Mr Hutchison added: "I hope you understand that we have been left with no option but to limit our provision over the three days of the planned industrial action and we will post any updates on the council’s communication channels."
