A SPILL of potentially hazardous materials resulted in the closure of a petrol station in Hamilton. 

Shell at Hamilton Services was shut due to a nearby lorry spillage. 

Fire crews were alerted to the incident at 5.33am this morning. A specialist unit was sent along with four fire engines.

Roads in the surrounding area were closed to traffic, with police guarding the scene.

A spokesperson for Shell confirmed the fuel station was closed as a precaution following an incident with the heavy goods vehicle nearby. 

We previously reported that junction 6 of the M74 (Hamilton services) was shut to traffic. 

The incident was first reported to Traffic Scotland at 6.33am. The northbound exit slip reopened at 11.06am. 

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 5.33am on Thursday, September 1, to Hamilton Services after a report of a spillage involving potentially hazardous materials.

“Operations control mobilised four fire appliances and a specialist unit to the scene where firefighters are currently working to make the area safe.”
