Rents and rail fares will be frozen over the winter under cost of living measures to be introduced in Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon has announced.

The First Minister said legislation would be introduced which will put in place a moratorium on evictions and a freeze on rents in the private and social rented sectors.

Sturgeon said it will include a provision to ensure “in practice the effect is that rents are frozen from today.”

Average private sector rents in the city have rocketed in recent years to just under £1000 a month.

Sturgeon said that ScotRail train fares will be frozen until March 2023.

And she confirmed the Scottish Child Payment will increase by £5 a week to £25 a week on November 14.

In her programme for government speech, outlining the government’s actions for the next year, the First Minister called for Liz Truss the new Prime Minister to convene a four nations summit on the cost of living crisis.

 Sturgeon said unless the UK Government gives more money, measures like the local government pay deal costing £700m will have to be taken from elsewhere in the Scottish budget.

She said there will be an emergency budget within two weeks of the UK spending review.
