A woman knocked her friend unconscious with a bottle.

Julie Candlish, 51, turned on Angela Mullan at her home in Glasgow's Toryglen on February 17, 2021.

The childhood friends were drinking together before the victim fell asleep.

She later woke up after being assaulted with a bottle which was cracked over her head.

Ms Mullan also received a fractured hand while trying to defend herself against the blows.

Candlish - a first offender - pleaded guilty this week at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assaulting Ms Mullan to her severe injury.

The court heard Candlish attended Ms Mullan's home where they drank alcohol.

Prosecutor Alasdair Knox told the court that no argument or disagreement had taken place at the time.

He said: "Ms Mullan fell asleep at some stage in the evening and recalls being woken up by Candlish assaulting her with a bottle.

"The bottle never broke from the blow to her head and body however she raised her hand to stop [a further blow] to her head.

"She subsequently passed out and woke up some time later alone in her flat."

Candlish left the flat meantime and attended at a neighbour's property where she stated that she had a "big barney" with Ms Mullan.

A 999 call was made and Ms Mullan was found with substantial bruising and swelling to her hand.

Mr Knox added: "A doctor treating her confirmed a superficial scalp bleeding with no breaks or damage to her skull.

"However, she had a break to her left hand that required surgery."

Officers traced Candlish and she was arrested.

Her lawyer, Billy Lavelle, will make his plea in mitigation at next month's sentencing.

Candlish, of the city's Langside, was granted bail meantime.
