IT’S maybe not up there with John Lambie replacing Sandy Clark as the most celebrated change in Partick Thistle history, but Glasgow Taxis had its own very effective swap of sorts at Firhill last weekend.
You see, every home matchday at the Jags ground in Maryhill, the red and yellow Partick Thistle taxi is on hand to help give a wee lift up the hill to the stand to fans who need it, most often the elderly or those with mobility issues.
However, on Saturday just past as Thistle played Cove Rangers, the red and yellow cab was unavailable so up stepped our Kevin with his equally impactful and bright pink People Make Glasgow taxi.
Would the Jags fans be turned off seeing their usual favourite and familiar vehicle being replaced by something not related to the club?
No chance. The big pink taxi – and our Kev – played a blinder and went down a storm with supporters.
It’s good to have strength in depth isn’t it!
It got me thinking as to all the iconic branded Glasgow taxis there have been over the years.
The first one that comes to mind is the Irn Bru cab which, if memory serves me correctly, even took some Scotland fans all the way down to London for EURO 96.
(If you were in that cab that day, please get in touch with the paper!)
In our current fleet we have some crackers like the Go Radio taxis and Glasgow Chamber of Commerce cabs.
Helping promote Glasgow Taxis as a business there are: Your City’s Friend, Glasgow Taxis, 0141 429 7070 and even a Chinese-language cab.
To promote the fact that we can provide advertising on our taxis – we even have a taxi advertising that fact too!
It seems to me the most simple ones are the best, which is why a bright orange Irn Bru taxi or red and yellow Thistle one are so striking, doing exactly what it says on the tin (note to self: give Ronseal’s commercial department a phone!).
And if simplicity really is king then maybe the most striking of all is also the plainest – our all-silver wedding taxis.
One final thing on last Saturday: Thistle moved top of the table come 4.45pm.
Wonder if Kev and the People Make Glasgow will retain their starting place next home game?
Stay safe!
