AN Oscar-winning actor has presented a University of the West of Scotland (UWS) filmmaker with a prestigious national award.

Sam Firth, BA Filmmaking Programme Leader, received the British Film Institute (BFI) & CHANEL Filmmaker Award from Tilda Swinton at a star-studded ceremony in London.

Sam won the prize for her innovative documentary The Wolf Suit – a highly personal film taking a look at her childhood; exploring why her memories of past events differ drastically from that of her sister and parents.

The film – which was produced, directed and edited by Sam - was one of four winners selected by a jury consisting of Ms Swinton, Edward Enniful OBE, British Vogue Editor-In-Chief Marie-Louise Khondji and BFI CEO Ben Roberts.

The jury praised Sam’s creativity, and stated: “Sam is a brave artist who, with The Wolf Suit, created and shared an exposing and wonderful film.

“Through her body of work, we found Sam to be doing something completely mysterious – producing work that is consistently extraordinary and very personal, yet all very different. She invests in the process as much as she invests in the final product.”

Sam said: “I am delighted to have received this award. I am grateful to the jury, and to the BFI and Creative Scotland for supporting my work.

“I am also grateful to the university, as I could not have done this without UWS. I have had lots of support both from the department and from students.”

As part of the prize, Sam will receive £20,000 from BFI, to support her to develop new work.
