A man was abusive to hospital staff as they tried to treat a wound on his face.

Ian Ryan, 49, appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court last week to be sentenced.

He was charged with obstructing medical staff at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) and acting aggressively towards them on April 8, 2020.

Prosecutor Brogan Moffat said: “The accused sustained a facial injury as a result of an earlier incident.

“He was being attended to by ambulance staff. He was thereafter conveyed to the QUEH.

"Police were in attendance in the ambulance. Both officers observed the accused to be intoxicated.

"At 8.15pm, staff in the hospital attempted to engage with the accused to treat his injuries.

“He was repeatedly abusive towards staff who attempted to assist. He was causing serious disruption within the ward.”

Ryan, of Govan, was shouting in full view of the ward, saying the staff were “standing about doing f**k all”.

He shouted: "F**k off, I'm no talking to you."

As staff tried to dress his wound, he continued to act aggressively.

Cops escorted him out of the A&E department, and he was placed under arrest, cautioned and charged and made no reply.

Sheriff Mark McGuire said: “I think he should be referred to the alcohol court. According to the social work report, he drinks four or five bottles of wine a day. We may as well give it a try.”

The sheriff told Ryan: “This is an unsavoury offence which seems to have been brought out by your intoxication.

“You appear to have a significant alcohol issue. We have a problem-solving court which may be in a position to deal with you in a more rehabilitative manner.”

Sentencing was deferred until November 7 to call for an assessment for the alcohol court.
