A seafood bar and restaurant in Hyndland has been granted permission to extend its licensed hours despite objections from the community.

Shucks on Hyndland Road can now serve alcohol to customers from 11am until midnight from Sunday to Wednesday - matching its hours from Thursday to Saturday.

There were 25 objections to the proposal from residents, with concerns over increased noise disturbing neighbours, but the city’s Licensing Board approved the changes.

Only one of the objectors attended the licensing hearing - a representative from Dowanhill, Hyndland and Kelvinside Community Council. 

She said: “Hyndland Road is a residential area, the licensed premises is under a residential tenement, next door to another and across the road from more tenements, where people are sleeping before their next day at work.

“The potential for late hours disturbance should definitely not be increased for any additional days beyond the current Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.”

Shucks had initially asked for permission to show televised sport but withdrew the request following the complaint from the community council.

Robin Morton, representing Shucks, said: “This is a restaurant, it’s 12am, not 1am, and 1am is the board’s policy for restaurants. 

“I don’t believe there have been any issues or incidents relative to the current operation. I would ask you to consider that being a restaurant, this is quite normal.”

However, the community council representative argued there is a problem with “creep” in the area, where licensed premises add “a bit more here, a bit more there” to their licences. 

“That’s the concern,” she said.

“No single one of them looks too bad but altogether they add up to a change in character of the area.”

A licensing official said there had been two complaints about the premises since the licence application was submitted. One related to the outdoor area being over capacity, which the official said hadn’t been “witnessed or substantiated”.

The other complaint referred to items being left outside the back of the premises and the official said it had been addressed by restaurant bosses.

Shucks can also now sell alcohol to diners for consumption off the premises.
