Liz Truss has resigned as Prime Minister after just 44 days.
In a statement at Downing Street today, she said that she has spoken to the King and resigned as the leader of the Conservative Party.
She said a new leader would be chosen in a contest and a new Prime Minister announced within a week.
She said she came into office at "a time of international instability".
However, she said she “accepted” she was “unable to deliver” the manifesto she stood on in the leadership contest.
Tory MPs had called publicly for her to resign - sending letters of no confidence to the chair of the 1922 backbenchers committee.
