A thug pocketed a man's ear after chewing it off in a fight.

Jamie Kennedy, 23, pounced on Bernard Mullen at a flat in Glasgow's Cranhill on May 28, 2022.

Kennedy lashed out after initially being attacked by Mr Mullen.

Kennedy retaliated by biting part of Mr Mullen's ear off and striking him with a glass bottle.

When Kennedy was later traced by police, he was found to have the severed lobe which could not be reattached.

On Thursday, Kennedy pleaded guilty under provocation at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assaulting Mr Mullen to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement.

He also admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner and breaching a bail condition.

The court heard Kennedy and Mr Mullen were at the flat with others drinking.

Mr Mullen attacked Kennedy in the morning which resulted in a fight between the pair.

Prosecutor Lauren Donnelly said: "Kennedy proceeded to bite off part of Mr Mullen's ear and struck him with a bottle of wine to his forehead."

Mr Mullen was later found roaming outside the flat's foyer area topless and covered in blood.

He stated to the concierge that a man had bitten his ear off.

A 999 call was made and Kennedy was traced where he made admissions that he bit Mr Mullen's ear off and struck him with a bottle after being assaulted.

Ms Donnelly added: "Part of Mr Mullen's ear was recovered in Kennedy's pocket."

Kennedy also fired abusive remarks to officers, such as: "If I see you out of your uniform, I will knock f*** out you.
"If I never had this behind my back, I will knock f*** out you both."

Mr Mullen was taken to hospital meantime for treatment.

Ms Donnelly said: "It was confirmed that it wasn't possible to reattach the severed earlobe and he would be left with permanent damage to his right ear."

Ian Sievwright, defending, told the court: "This is obviously a serious matter and Mr Kennedy has a minimal record."

Sentence was deferred pending background reports until next month by Sheriff Andrew Cubie.

He told Kennedy: "You no doubt recognise the charge is a very serious matter.

"This was a savage assault.

"As part of his ear was removed and found in your pocket it gives me real cause for concern."

Kennedy, who appeared from custody, had his remand continued meantime.
