LANDLORDS of a famous Glasgow building are hoping to attract a ‘prime’ bar and restaurant to the city centre.

Shepherd Chartered Surveyors has already leased the upper floors of Glasgow’s iconic Teacher Building in St Enoch Square to Sonder, and is now bringing to market the food and drink opportunity for the ground and lower ground floors.

The upper floors are currently undergoing an extensive refurbishment by the landlord to be turned into 25 serviced apartments for short-term accommodation.

The restaurant and bar space, which is currently a shell, has full consent for a public house/restaurant with outside seating, providing a bespoke bar area towards the front with a 101-seater restaurant towards the rear.

The B-listed Teacher Building was constructed in 1875, designed by architect James Boucher, who also helped design the Kibble Palace in the Botanic Gardens. It was built to house the headquarters, offices and dram shop of whisky company William Teacher and Son.

Steve Barnett, managing partner at Shepherd Chartered Surveyors, said: “Having been involved in a number of hotel transactions within the immediate locale, including the sale of the iconic Custom House (now the four-star Clayton Hotel) and now the Teacher Building, we are delighted to secure Sonder as operator for its upper floors as part of its overall expansion drive.

“With plans to open this summer, the 25 serviced apartments will be designed to balance the building’s whisky heritage with contemporary design.”

St Enoch Square and the surrounding area are currently undergoing significant investment and development, with £40 million refurbishment of the St Enoch Centre, a new Premier Inn and the new 294-bed Clayton Hotel.
