Hay tried to confront Mr McCafferty before getting into a car and following him home.

It is there Hay tried to strike Mr McCafferty who was also armed with a baseball bat.

Hay then fled the scene in Mr McCafferty's unattended car which had the engine running.

Hay pleaded guilty today at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assaulting Mr McCafferty and stealing his car.

He also admitted to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.

The court heard Mr McCafferty was driving home after the Rangers and Celtic match which the hosts won 1-0.

Mr McCafferty passed Celtic Park on his route.

Prosecutor Heather Naismith said: "Mr McCafferty is a Rangers fan and by his own admission he intended to antagonise any Celtic fans he passed.

"He was sounding his horn and cheering out of his window."

Hay meantime was the passenger in a car travelling near Mr McCafferty.

Hay got out and pulled the handle of Mr McCafferty's car shouting to let him in.

Hay returned to the car he was in, which followed Mr McCafferty back to his home.

Mr McCafferty called his mum meantime to tell her he was being followed and asked for a baseball bat.

He stopped in the middle of the road and left the key in the ignition and engine running before retrieving the bat.

Miss Naismith: "The other car pulled up alongside Mr McCafferty and immediately Hay got half out and lunged at him with a screwdriver in his hand, attempting to unsuccessfully stab him with it.

"Mr McCafferty managed to get out of the way."

Hay went on to run at Mr McCafferty's unattended vehicle and went inside.

Hay then left the scene and the car was found abandoned later that day in Milton.

He was later found to have been driving while disqualified and without insurance.

Linda Findlay, defending, told the court that the dad-of-two, of Springburn, has been out of prison since 2015.

Sentencing was deferred pending background reports until next month by Sheriff Iain Fleming.

He said: "I will continue bail but you shouldn't construe that you will avoid a custodial sentence, this was a serious matter which you pled guilty to."
