GLASGOW has the highest number of smoking-related deaths in the country, according to new research.
Figures by health experts Now Patient show that 509 people across the city lost their lives, while 414 residents in North Lanarkshire and 404 in West Dunbartonshire also died as a result of the habit.
East Renfrewshire has the fewest smoking-related deaths in Scotland, with 200 per 100,000 people.
The data examined smoking mortality rates across each local authority area in the UK.

A spokesperson for Now Patient added: “Studies highlight the plethora of health risks associated with regular tobacco inhalation, including cancer and heart disease.
“Our priority is to help people manage their health by providing all the necessary resources. Despite all of the damning evidence showing why you shouldn’t smoke, it somehow remains a popular habit across the country.
“We also provide tips on how you can quit smoking in the hope that we can inspire people to take control of their health.”
