COUNCIL bosses in East Kilbride have confirmed a popular ice rink WILL stay open following the shock closure of an adjacent soft play centre and climbing wall.
As the Glasgow Times exclusively revealed on Sunday, Aerial Adventures – which also runs a high-ropes adventure course above the rink in the town’s shopping centre – suddenly announced it had closed its doors.
The announcement on social media caused a flurry of concerned comments about the future of the ice rink, which is home to East Kilbride Curling Club and East Kilbride Ice Skating Figure Club.
When it opened in 2016, Aerial Adventures was part of a £10m leisure development which included 11 new restaurants and cafes, a refurbished ice rink, a state-of-the-art fitness centre and the existing nine-screen Odeon cinema.
Now, most of the restaurants and cafes have closed. Sapphire, the owner of EK, East Kilbride, went into administration on November 16, 2022.
However, South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture (SLLC) who run the ice rink, confirmed it will remain open.
Kay Morrison, chief executive of SLLC, said: “East Kilbride’s ice rink continues to be popular with, and well-used by, groups and individuals.
“We certainly hope it stays that way in the future, and there are no plans to close it.”
