VANDALS who wrecked the perimeter fence at a Drumchapel school are forcing some young pupils to stay inside at playtime, a headteacher has said.

Lyndsay Murray, headteacher at Langfaulds Primary, said: “The fence was put up in August and it has been repeatedly vandalised since then.

“At the moment, it's happening every day and we are coming in every morning to find it damaged – one day, 25 panels were down, the next, 15. It is incredibly frustrating.”

The school has also suffered a spate of broken windows.

Lyndsay added: “We have an additional support needs centre here and some of our children don’t have an understanding of safety, so they simply can’t go out to play when the fence is down.

“Many of the children are really sad coming to school and seeing this when they arrive.

“Drumchapel is a great community and there is a real buzz around the area’s 70th anniversary celebrations.

"It’s sad a very small minority are spoiling things when the majority of people here have great pride in the area and want to maintain it as best they can.”

Councillor Christina Cannon, city convener for education, communities and equalities, said: “This vandalism is so pointless and it is upsetting to know the impact that it is having on the children.

“The fact that the culprits are coming back repeatedly needs to be stopped and officers will work with the police and the local community to do all that we can to find a solution.”
