Parents inspired by Love Island as top Glasgow baby names revealed

Grace was the top name for girls while Muhammad took first place for boys, according to The National Records of Scotland (NRS).

Meanwhile Luca took the fourth spot for boys in Glasgow and was fifth place for the whole of Scotland.

Statisticians believe the name jumping up 20 places from the previous year could be influenced by Luca Bish appearing on Love Island.

Pop culture is also believed to have inspired other popular names like Maeve, which appeared in the top 100 Glasgow list, after it was used a lot by Netflix last year.

The figures also confirmed that the name Jack is no longer the most popular boy name in Scotland, for the first time in 14 years.

Instead, it has been replaced with Noah as 373 baby boys were given the name in 2022.

Despite the slight decrease in popularity across Scotland, Jack still scooped second place in Glasgow as Noah took third place.

For girls, the top name across the country is Olivia, for the second year in a row and has been hailed a long-term favourite.

Olivia also ranked second place in Glasgow as 32 babies were given the name, behind the 33 infants who were named Grace.

NRS statistician Daniel Burns said: “Glasgow was the only area to have Grace as the top name.

“Not one council area had both Olivia and Noah as the top names, despite them both being the most popular names in Scotland.

“A relative flood of babies named Noah in the last four years has seen the name leap from eighth to first.

“There are now so many more names in use, as parents aim for something more unusual, that it takes far fewer babies to share a name for it to be high up in the charts.

“Luca has climbed 20 places to land in fifth place for boys, moving into the top 10 for the first time; possibly given a boost by Luca Bish appearing on Love Island.

“The name Maeve has been used in a couple of different TV shows and has grown in popularity over the past few years.”

The figures were revealed at an event held at Bridgeton Library where mums met for a book bug session.

Glasgow parents told us what they thought of the list and how they chose their babies' names.

Alice Charlton said: "I always try and look for something unusual and different, Olivia was a popular name so I chose Olive instead."

Heather Grassan-Dobson with son Ruairidh said: "I really like Scottish names, so I knew that was something important to me when picking."

Kirsty Rizzo, who was with her baby Harry, said: "I look at the list to try and avoid the top names, they are nice but I wanted something different."
