SEVERAL bakeries in Glasgow and the surrounding area have won awards at Scottish Baker of the Year 2023/24.

City Market Bakery, at City of Glasgow College, were big winners after taking home five awards at the celebration that took place in Glasgow on Friday night.

Both their caramel apple crumble pie and bolognese pie with Grana Padano crumb won the regional bronze award in the individual cake and savoury categories, while their carrot cake won the Best in Region Gold Award in the individual cake category.

Glasgow Times:

Their gluten-free soda bread was awarded the national bronze award in the free-from (bread) category, while their gluten-free orange and cranberry muffin was given the national silver award for free-from (biscuits & cakes). 

Cumbernauld's Bavarian Bakehouse took home two top prizes in its first year of entering. 

Their linzer biscuit won the regional bronze award in the biscuit category, while their 1kg seeded gluten free loaf won the Best in Scotland Gold Award in the free-from (bread category). 

They also made it to the final stages of the Wholesale Baker of the Year category which recognises businesses, rather than products.

Glasgow Times:

Newlands Home Bakery of Glasgow won the national silver award for their potato scone, while California Kitchen and Catering of Glasgow was awarded the regional silver award in the bread (sourdough) category for their organic everyday sourdough. 

Meanwhile, McGhee's Bakery won the regional bronze award for their crispy morning roll in the morning roll category.

We previously reported West End bakery Plant Blonde won the regional bronze award for their raspberry and lemon deluxe empire in the biscuit category and were also customer choice finalists.

Wholesale baker Cakes by Rebecca won the Wholesale Baker Customer Choice Award, which is voted for by loyal customers. 

Ian McGhee, Scottish Bakers president, said: "Each year our judges look for the best scones, loaves, savoury items, morning rolls, individual cakes and biscuits, as well as French and Danish style pastries and Free-from bread, biscuits and cakes and the competition was once again close run.

"It was great to see the best iconic Scottish bakes entered alongside some fantastic new innovation on show, a real celebration of our fantastic sector.

"Each and every winner should be justifiably proud and we hope that for every well-deserved prize there is a corresponding business boost.

"Well done again to you all."

Mich Turner, Scottish Baker of the Year ambassador and star baker, added: "With 630 products from 70 bakers in the running, each and every one of which was assessed for appearance, the quality of the bake and taste. 

"They can be rightly proud of their win."
