A GLASGOW school where “diversity is celebrated widely” has been given a positive report card by education inspectors.

Shawlands Academy headteacher Pauline Carr paid tribute to the whole school community after the Education Scotland team’s findings were published.

She said: “Our recent inspection report reflects the strengths of our diverse school community and our determination to improve outcomes for all our young people, both in terms of attainment and experiences.

“Thank you to all our staff, partners, young people and their families who contribute to the continued success of Shawlands Academy.”

Inspectors described the Southside school as having “a calm, welcoming ethos that creates a positive environment for learning across the school” and added: “Young people have a strong sense of belonging across the school community where diversity is celebrated widely.”

The report noted young people “support and work with each other well in tasks and activities” and continued: “There are nurturing relationships between the young people. Their relationships with staff across the school are also positive and respectful.”

The inspectors praised rising attainment at the school, which has around 1470 pupils.

“As young people progress through the school, attainment is showing signs of strong improvement for those who choose to stay on at Shawlands Academy,” said the report.

Some areas for improvement were identified and discussed with the headteacher and a representative from Glasgow City Council. The report advised the school should continue to raise attainment at all stages and embed recently developed approaches to checking how well young people progress and attain across the school.

Councillor Christina Cannon, city convener for education, communities and equalities, said: “I am delighted for the school that inspectors have highlighted a number of key strengths.

“The report celebrates the diversity of the school community and the inclusive learning that shines through the year groups.

“Attainment is recognised for the levels of improvement and I hope that families are proud of their published inspection report. A big well done to all involved.”
