TORMENTED neighbours have pleaded with a Glasgow housing association to remove a “nightmare tenant” who has made their lives a misery.

Those living in the building in Govan’s MacLean Square have been battling for two years to see a Wheatley tenant removed.

A mix of homeowners and renters say they are at their wits' end after eviction plans were held up due to “staffing issues” within the legal department.

William Horne, who bought a property within the high-rise two years ago, said they have been plagued with issues.

The 39-year-old told the Glasgow Times: “When he first moved in, neighbours offered to help him as it was particularly bad weather.

Glasgow Times:

“The first incident wasn’t long after in April 2021, he lost his keys and then decided to break a window to climb in the house – despite not living on the ground floor – since then it’s been an absolute nightmare.

“That flat has become a bit of a haven for all the, sort of, no gooders around the area.”

William and his neighbours claim they have been subjected to threats, abuse and vandalism of the common areas within the building.

Meanwhile, they’ve come home to both the tenant and his friends passed out in the common close.

It’s got to the point where some of those in the building feel so unsafe, they’ve chosen to abandon their homes and stay with family, while others have banned loved ones from visiting for fear they’ll end up caught in the middle.

William, a partnership manager, added: “The police have kicked the door in numerous times, he’s actually carved that I’m a c*** into his front door, and the housing keep saying they’ll intervene but we’re still waiting.

“We were told that short-staffing in the legal department has resulted in a delay in getting an eviction order process but it’s been two years now – how long are we meant to live like this?”

Correspondence seen by the Glasgow Times confirms police attendance at the property on multiple occasions, while housing officers have made multiple attempts to visit the tenant and resolve the issues.

Glasgow Times:

Maureen Mackay, who also lives in the building, said the situation has taken a massive toll on the mental health of those living there.

She said: “We’ve been going through this process over and over but nothing is changing.

“They keep saying to contact them, to keep them up to date but we try and here we are.

“We were told ages ago now this would be sorted and we’re just living in hell.”

The most recent correspondence sent to residents by Wheatley says staffing within its legal team has been partly to blame for delays.

A Wheatley Homes Glasgow spokesperson said: “As legal action is underway, we’re unable to comment on this case.

“We take reports of anti-social behaviour and crime in our communities very seriously. We fully investigate all claims and take appropriate action.

“We urge tenants and homeowners who have concerns about anti-social behaviour to report it to the police and then let their housing officer know.”
