Midge Ure will celebrate his 70th birthday with a performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

The Scottish musician, who co-wrote Do They Know It’s Christmas? with Boomtown Rats frontman Sir Bob Geldof for Band Aid, will headline the one-night-only concert on October 4.

Ure, 69, was the frontman of Ultravox and a member of Irish hard rock band Thin Lizzy and new wave group Visage.

The star, who grew up in Cambuslang, said: “What do you get as a gift on your significant 70th? A birthday celebration show at the Royal Albert Hall of course.

“There are prestige venues and globally renowned prestige venues and the RAH falls into the latter. That is the ultimate gift for a musician, one which lasts for the rest of your life.”

The Ivor Novello winner, who has also been nominated for a Grammy, had a number one single with If I Was in 1985 and success with numerous bands.

In 1976, with Scottish pop group Slik, Forever And Ever reached the top of the charts and he later played with former Sex Pistol Glen Matlock’s band Rich Kids.

He then started performing with new wave band Ultravox, which released Reap The Wild Wind, Dancing With Tears In My Eyes, Love’s Great Adventure and Vienna.

In 1984, he appeared alongside artists such as Wham!’s George Michael and Spandau Ballet’s Martin Kemp in Band Aid, which raised millions of pounds for famine relief in Ethiopia.

Ure’s services to music and charity were recognised in 2005, when he became an OBE in the same year he organised Live 8 with Sir Bob.

He has played at various locations in the UK for his 2023 Voice & Visions tour and has promised a surprise for the London concert.
