An Orange Order parade that was due to go past a catholic church has been re-routed.

The organisers of the march, which is taking place on Friday evening, contacted the council to ask to change the details of the route of the procession.

The Bridgeton True Blues LOL 232 were to march along streets in the east end, including Abercromby Street past St Mary’s of the Assumption catholic church.

Parishioners and a campaign group Call it Out, which had previously protested at Orange parades in the east end, had separately requested the council order a re-route but were told there were no grounds to impose any changes.

Call it Out announced it would be holding a protest against the march outside the church.

The organiser of the march has since made a request to change the route to avoid passing the church.

The details of the parade have now been updated on the council website to reflect the changed route.

Call it Out had said: “An Anti-catholic procession is due to take place past St Mary of the Assumption church in Abercromby street on Friday 30/6/23.

“Glasgow City Council having consulted Police Scotland see no reason to re-route it despite the request of the parishioners and us. Therefore, we must respond.”

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: “The organiser has notified the council of their intention to amend the route of their procession on Friday.

“Following discussions with Police Scotland, the change has been agreed.”

It is understood the organisers came to the decision themselves without any contact from the police or council.

The amended route is now Tullis Street, Main Street, Bridgeton Cross, London Road, Fielden Street,  Millerston Street, Duke Street, Bellgrove Street, Gallowgate, Fielden Street, Crownpoint Road, David Street, Broad Street, Summer Street, London Road, Bridgeton Cross, James Street, Mackeith Street, Main Street, Tullis Street.

On Saturday, the County Grand Lodge annual Boyne parade takes place on streets across the city with thousands of Orange Lodge members, bands and followers converging in the city centre to head to Glasgow green for a rally.

Call it Out reacted to the change on social media, stating: “We have just been informed that the organisers of the anti-Catholic march which was due to pass St Mary's in Abercromby St have submitted an amended route and will not now pass the church. We welcome this move and hope that the new route will be used in future.

“On that basis we are rescinding our call for progressive people to assemble at the Church on Friday. Thanks to all of you who pledged your support. Let's hope that this is a sign of things to come.”
