A councillor who threatened to cut the grass in her local park herself unless something was done has warned more work is needed to tidy up the area for local children.
Audrey Dempsey said the recreation space at Robroyston Park is badly needed by kids amid the cost of living crisis as many families can’t afford trips away.
The Labour politician was becoming so concerned about the East End park being inaccessible she was planning to borrow machinery to get it chopped.
But the council have stepped in and cut a portion of the grass at the back of the tenement block and at the swing park.
The work took place two days before the summer holidays in June, according to Labour councillor Dempsey.
The Springburn, Robroyston politician expressed relief at the work that has taken place so far but would also like to see grass shortened at the pond area so families can sit near it.
She said: “The park has been completely wild and overgrown. It is insane. The council say they are going back to nature. But the animals will be better off than the kids. Children would have nowhere to play.”
She hopes to meet with council officers to discuss expansion of grass cutting to other areas of the park.
Quad bike and motorbike riders have also been causing anti-social behaviour in the park – making families feel threatened.
A spokesman for the council said: “Robroyston Park is a local nature reserve with large areas of wetland and must be managed sensitively to protect park’s biodiversity.
“However, we have recently been cutting grass close to facilities such as the play area and the sports court as well as around the park’s entrances.
“We have already had positive and constructive discussions with Councillor Dempsey about the maintenance of the park and we will meet with her again in the near future to go over different options.
“We are looking at the possibility of establishing a Friends of Robroyston Park group and other ways in which the community can support their local green space alongside our own maintenance programme.”
