TRAIN services were disrupted at the weekend after a man allegedly trespassed on a railway line in Paisley.

Police were called to Douglas Street at around 10pm on Sunday after local residents reported seeing the 26-year-old suspect armed with an axe.

When officers arrived at the scene, it is claimed the man fled through several back gardens before running onto the nearby railway line.

ScotRail was forced to temporarily halt two of its services as officers searched the area using police dogs.

The suspect was soon traced by police and taken into custody.

He was charged with breach of the peace, possession of an offensive weapon and trespassing on railway lines.

Police said nobody was injured during the incident.

The suspect is due to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court today.

Phil Campbell, head of customer operations at ScotRail, added: "Two ScotRail services were delayed as a result of this incident. 

"We take this opportunity to remind people not to trespass anywhere on the railway as they put themselves and others at risk of serious injury."
