Tributes have been paid to a former Glasgow Clan ice hockey player after his tragic death aged 33.

Mike Hammond, who played with the Clan from 2016 to 2017, died in a car accident in British Columbia, Canada on Wednesday when his vehicle veered off the road.

The Brighton-born sportsman's death was announced on Thursday by Ice Hockey UK.

A statement read: “Great Britain ice hockey are devastated to announce that forward Mike Hammond has passed away.

“Hammond died last night in a car accident in Shawnigan in North America.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with Mike’s family, friends and teammates at this very difficult time.”

Before his death, Hammond was due to be announced as rejoining Glasgow Clan for the 2023/24 season.

Clan staff were looking forward to welcoming him back, and have since shared their tributes.

Head coach Jason Morgan said: "I’m so saddened by the devastating news about Mike Hammond and I’m at a loss for words.

"My deepest condolences go out to the whole Hammond family as they go through this very difficult time.

"I was thrilled for the upcoming season to have the opportunity to work with Hammy, but this is such terrible news for everyone."

Clan senior advisor Aaron Murphy added: "I want to extend my condolences to Mike’s family at this terrible time.

"We all know what a player he was and I enjoyed calling some of his big moments in commentary, particularly for GB and I was looking forward to working with him this season.

"He will be sadly missed by everyone in the British ice hockey community and my thoughts are with Mike’s family and friends."

Glasgow Clan supporters' club also shared a message after hearing the news, saying: "We are deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Clan favourite Mike Hammond.

"We send our condolences and love to his family at this tragic time."

Hammond made 48 appearances with Glasgow Clan, scoring 26 times and making 23 assists, for 49 points.

He went on to serve Manchester Storm, Nottingham Panthers and Coventry Blaze during the Elite Series and played a key role during the recent World Championship campaigns, including winning a gold medal in the Division 1A group earlier this season.
