Work is set to take place on a busy road in Renfrew next week to tackle flooding next to a roundabout.

It is understood vehicles have been struggling through water in Paisley Road, next to Arkleston roundabout, for several months.

Councillor Jim Paterson, who represents Renfrew South and Gallowhill, said he had raised the issue with the roads department at Renfrewshire Council earlier this year.

In a Facebook post, he wrote: "The matter was then reported to Scottish Water for action who advise that they have investigated and found a collapse in the receiving sewer. 

"They have also instructed their contractor to excavate and repair this fault and I am currently awaiting a start date.

"I have contacted the chief executive at Scottish Water to underline the urgency of a repair as the flooding is impacting on the pavement and both lanes."

A Scottish Water spokesperson told The Glasgow Times that initial reports that flooding was due to a collapsed sewer had not been confirmed.

They said: "Following reports of sewer flooding, we have carried out some cleaning and surveys of the sewer at the Arkleston roundabout, Paisley Road. 

"Our contractors have also regularly attended to clear any surface water during heavy rainfall events, while the issue has been investigated.

"Initial thoughts that this was a collapsed sewer have not been confirmed. However, we are carrying out some further cleaning and survey work to address silt which has built up in the sewer."

This work is set to start on Monday, August 7, and will involve lane restrictions at the location to allow a full clean-up to be carried out safely.

The Scottish Water spokesperson added: "We are also liaising with the local authority roads team regarding further maintenance works required to clear the road gullies.

"We apologise to residents and commuters for any inconvenience and hope to have this issue resolved as soon as possible."
