Concerns have been raised over the future of staff at Renfrewshire's only five-star hotel after it plunged into administration.

We previously reported that Mar Hall Golf and Spa Resort, located on a 240-acre woodland estate in Bishopton, had been put up for sale.

A statement issued by administrators EY-Parthenon said the hotel would continue to trade on a "business-as-usual basis" but a number of local politicians have now expressed their concerns for the 118 staff employed at the resort.

Neil Bibby, who represents Renfrewshire as part of his West Scotland remit, said he hoped every job would remain safe.

He told The Glasgow Times: "This news will be incredibly concerning and worrying for over a hundred workers and their families. The staff have provided a five-star service for many years.

"Mar Hall has a fantastic reputation here and overseas. It is an important business for Renfrewshire in its own right and supports many others.

"Given its importance and reputation, I hope these jobs can be retained and the future of the business can secured as quickly as possible."

Renfrewshire North and West MSP Natalie Don and Paisley and Renfrewshire North MP Gavin Newlands both expressed disappointment that the hotel had fallen into administration.

Ms Don said: "I share the worries and uncertainty that all members of staff will be feeling at this time, especially due to the additional pressures of the cost of living crisis.

"I have written to the administrators to express my concerns about the future of the 118 staff currently employed by Mar Hall, as well as the wider impact it may have on the local community.

"As options for sale are explored over the coming weeks and months, I have called on the administrators to do everything they can to protect these jobs and reach a positive outcome.

"I have also offered to meet with Mar Hall to further discuss this situation, and offer my support to all those affected during these difficult times."

Mr Newlands added: "The prestigious hotel is Renfrewshire's only five-star resort and is an important part of the hospitality industry both locally and across Scotland and has played a significant role in local tourism.

"These are very challenging times for businesses and the hospitality industry as a whole and I hope that something can be worked out.

"The resort employs 118 members of staff and given the current economic climate the need for job security is essential and I hope that the situation can be resolved with the upmost urgency."
