A SHOPLIFTER has been tagged after stealing more than £700 worth of items from two major retailers.
Daniel Whitelaw appeared for sentencing at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Wednesday after previously pleading guilty to shoplifting from M&S and JD Sports.
The court heard that on the morning of October 27, 2022, the 31-year-old entered M&S on Argyle Street and stole £79.50 worth of clothing as well as “beauty boxes”, worth a total of £600.
He was apprehended immediately, and the items were recovered.
Earlier that year on the morning of March 3, 2022, Whitelaw entered JD Sports at the Forge Shopping Centre and stole £50 worth of sportswear.
The clothing was not recovered as Whitelaw, from Dennistoun, could not be traced.
Speaking to his lawyer, Sheriff Patricia Pryce said: “At the time, your client had real issues abusing Valium. The [criminal justice and social work] report suggests supervision. I am considering a restriction of liberty order too.”
The defence solicitor replied: “He is currently living with his mother who he cares for.
“He’s hoping to get employment with his uncle. There are intentions for him to commence work next month, but he will be able to fit his shifts around the order.”
Sheriff Pryce told Whitelaw: “You are addressing your issues in terms of your addiction. I can deal with this by an alternative to custody despite your bad record.
“I think you need support to assist you through your recovery.”
He was placed under social work supervision for 15 months and tagged. He will require to stay within his home between 7pm-7am for 15 weeks.
Sheriff Pryce added: “If you don’t comply I'll have no option but to send you to jail.”
