Susan Aitken, leader of Glasgow City Council is expected to go to Dubai for COP 28 this year.

The annual climate change conference, which was held in Glasgow two years ago moves to the United Arab Emirates, in the middle east after taking place in Egypt last year.

Councillors on the City administration Committee are being asked to approve the six-day trip for the leader to attend key days during the conference.

A council report states the purpose of the trip is to “ensure that Glasgow has a place in global debate on the most pressing issue of the times, and carry forward further legacy benefits from its COP26 host role.”

The six-day trip is costed at more than £1600 with £655 for a return flight to Dubai and, hotel accommodation for 5 nights at £1006.

The event takes place in Dubai from November 30 to December 12 and Ms Aitken would attend from December 3 to December 6.

A council report states: “Legacy activities with other cities and city networks have continued since the last two COP events and provided an important context for learning on issues such as climate finance, supporting green economic development, and shared aims around ensuring that a just transition takes place for workers, businesses and communities.

“The arrival of COP28 later this year presents a further opportunity to enhance these relationships. “

The report adds: “As in previous years, the host Presidency has chosen themes for each day during COP, as detailed in the table below.

“There are a number of key areas of interest for Glasgow in them, particularly on 4 December (finance) and on 6 December (the leadership role of urban and sub-national government).

The Just Transition theme, Which the council said is “an area on which the Council has a particularly strong focus” takes place on December 5.

Last year Councillor Aitken led a team to the Cop 27 in Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt.
