SCHOOLS across Glasgow will close next week due to strike action.
We previously reported Unison announced staff working in Glasgow, Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire and Inverclyde councils will walk out on Wednesday, November 1 in a dispute over pay.
The move comes after catering, cleaning, pupil support, administration and janitorial employees represented by the union voted overwhelmingly to reject Cosla’s latest pay offer.
Now, Glasgow City Council has confirmed that all its nurseries, primary schools and ASL schools (including ASL secondaries) will be closed to children and young people.
Secondary schools will only be open for pupils in S4-S6, except for r Àrd-sgoil Ghàidhlig Ghlaschu which will be closed to all pupils.
A letter sent to all parents and carers read: "The strike involves a high percentage of our Education Services staff and will include support for learning workers, escorts, administration staff, catering, janitorial, cleaning services and school crossing patrollers.
"It is therefore not possible to secure a safe environment and provide lunches for our young people or maintain continuity of learning."
Mark Ferguson, UNISON Scotland chair of the local government committee, previously said: “"No one takes the decision to strike lightly.
"I’m a parent myself, so I understand the disruption strikes cause. But if wages don’t rise, school staff will leave for other jobs beyond education that pay significantly more.
"That would be a disaster and would help no one. The current offer amounts to a real-terms pay cut and adds further stress to a dedicated workforce already suffering from the cost-of-living crisis.
"Cosla and the Scottish government need to give school staff a decent wage rise, fund any increase properly and commit to implementing a pay rate of £15 per hour for all local government workers."
Free school meal payments of £2.50 per day for all free school meal entitled families with children in P1 - S3 will be made directly into bank accounts along with the Winter school closure payment to cover the day of strike action.
